Thomas Gray‘s poem Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard is one of the most famous poems in English. Based on translation statistics, it is a first-rate masterpiece. It has been translated into over 140 languages. Though the poem is only 128 lines long, Gray worked at it for nine years to perfect it. The composition is perfect in its matter and manner, and no wonder it has become a classic in English. One strong reason for Gray’s Elegy‘s universal popularity is its theme’s novelty. Mourning over the death of humble, simple village folk, the unknown, unwept, unhonoured, unsung rustic rude forefathers of hamlet has the attraction of novelty. Gray’s heroes are village Hampdens and guiltless Cromwells. Gray attempted something no other poet had attempted earlier; hence, the theme is novel. A second reason for Gray’s Elegy‘s universal appeal is its felicitous language. A few lines of this poem are proverbs on the tip of every man’s tongue, and a few phrases are current idioms. Thoughts and sentiments may be ordinary, but Gray’s language is extraordinarily brilliant. Despite the novelty of its theme and the felicity of its language, according to some critics, Gray’s Elegy betrays a bit of puerility in its concluding part, where, after pouring forth many elegiac sentiments in very appealing language, the poet gives an extended character study of himself and offers an epitaph to be engraved on his tombstone. However, the poem’s depth and structural beauty make it one of the best works of English literature.
