Travel writing is writing about our travel experiences and journeys. It helps readers imagine different places, people, food, and culture. Good travel writing includes descriptions, feelings, and special experiences. It makes readers feel as if they are travelling with the writer. By using simple and interesting words, writers can make travel stories lively and enjoyable. Below are some points to keep in mind when writing about travel experiences.
Describe the Place
When we write about travel experiences, we should first describe the place clearly. We can explain the beauty, surroundings, weather, and atmosphere of the place. Good descriptions help readers easily imagine the destination.
For example, we can describe Munnar in Kerala as a beautiful hill station covered with green tea plantations and cool misty hills. The backwaters of Alappuzha can be described as calm and peaceful, with houseboats slowly moving through the water. Kovalam beach can be described as a lovely place where the sea shines under the golden evening sun.
Talk About What You Saw and Felt
Travel writing becomes interesting when we describe what we saw, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt during the journey.
Sight
We should describe colours, scenery, and beautiful views. For example, the flower gardens in Thovala are full of bright colours, and the green coconut trees near the Kerala backwaters create a relaxing view.
Sound
Sounds help create atmosphere in travel writing. For example, we can describe the sound of waves at Varkala beach, the songs of birds in Thekkady forest, or the sound of rain falling on the rooftops during the Kerala monsoon season.
Smell
Describing smells makes writing more realistic. For example, we can write about the smell of fresh spices in the markets of Kochi or the smell of coconut oil and delicious food from small restaurants in Kerala villages.
Taste
Food is an important part of travel experiences. For example, writers can describe the taste of Kerala dishes such as appam and stew, puttu and kadala curry, or milk payasam served during festivals.
Touch
We can also describe physical feelings and textures. For example, the cool water of Athirappilly waterfalls or the soft sand of Kovalam beach under our feet can make the experience feel real for readers.
Share Your Feelings
Travel writing should include feelings and emotions. Writers should explain how they felt during the journey. For example, standing on top of the hills in Wayanad may make a person feel peaceful and free. Watching the sunset from Bekal Fort may create feelings of happiness and wonder. Sharing emotions makes travel writing personal and meaningful.
Talk About Special Experiences
Special experiences make travel stories more memorable. For example, writers can describe activities such as travelling in a houseboat in Alappuzha, watching Kathakali performances in Kochi, riding a jeep through the forests of Thekkady, or enjoying a snake boat race during Onam. These experiences make the journey exciting and unique.
Share Something About the People and Culture
Good travel writing also talks about local people and culture. For example, writers can describe the kindness and hospitality of people in Kerala villages. They can also write about traditional festivals like Onam and Thrissur Pooram, traditional art forms like Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, and local customs and food habits. This helps readers better understand the place’s culture.
Use Interesting Words
Travel writing should use simple yet interesting words to make it lively and attractive. For example, writers can use expressions such as: Beautiful views, Green hills, Peaceful backwaters, Exciting adventures, Busy markets, Quiet villages, Fun activities, Special memories, Delicious food, New experiences. These words help readers imagine the journey clearly and enjoy the travel experience through the writer’s words.
