Blended Learning is an instructional approach that combines traditional classroom teaching with online and digital learning activities. It uses both face-to-face teaching and technology to create a flexible, interactive, and effective learning environment. In English Language Teaching (ELT), blended learning helps students improve their language skills through classroom interaction, online activities, videos, digital tools, and virtual communication. Blended learning is becoming very popular in modern education because it supports active learning and gives students more opportunities to practise English both inside and outside the classroom.
Features of Blended Learning in ELT
Blended learning combines classroom learning with online learning. It includes both synchronous and asynchronous learning methods. It encourages student participation, collaboration, and independent learning. Students can learn at their own pace using digital resources such as videos, online quizzes, games, discussion boards, and learning platforms. Teachers can also personalise lessons according to students’ needs.
Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning

Synchronous Learning
Synchronous learning happens when teachers and students meet online at the same time. It is called real-time learning. Students attend live classes, participate in discussions, and interact directly with the teacher and classmates through online platforms. For example, students may join a live English speaking class where they practise conversation skills with their teacher.
Asynchronous Learning
Asynchronous learning happens when students learn independently at their own time. They watch recorded videos, complete assignments, read materials, or submit tasks before a deadline set by the teacher. For example, students may watch a grammar video and complete writing exercises at home before attending the next class.
Importance of Blended Learning in ELT
Blended learning is very important in ELT because language learning requires continuous practice and communication. Technology helps teachers create interesting, interactive activities that improve students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It also allows students to continue learning outside the classroom. Students become more confident, independent, and motivated because they can practise English with a variety of digital tools and resources.
Benefits of Blended Learning in ELT
One important benefit of blended learning is flexibility. Students can learn anytime and anywhere using online materials. They can revise lessons at their own pace and convenience. Another benefit is personalised learning. Teachers can provide activities based on students’ individual needs, strengths, and weaknesses. This helps students learn more effectively. Blended learning also improves all four language skills — listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking and listening activities are usually practised during live classes, while reading and writing tasks can be completed independently. Interactive online activities such as quizzes, games, videos, and multimedia presentations make learning more enjoyable and increase student engagement. Students also get more time to understand difficult grammar points and vocabulary through repeated practice. Another major advantage is learner autonomy. Students learn to take responsibility for their own learning by completing assignments and practising language skills independently. Blended learning also promotes collaboration. Students can interact through discussion boards, group projects, online presentations, and collaborative tasks. Online learning platforms also make learning materials easily accessible at any time. Teachers can monitor student performance through online quizzes and assignments and provide immediate feedback.
Drawbacks of Blended Learning
Although blended learning has many advantages, it also has some disadvantages. Technical problems, such as a poor internet connection and a lack of digital devices, can affect learning. Another problem is reduced face-to-face interaction. Some students may miss direct communication with teachers and classmates, which may affect their social and communication skills. Teachers may also require special training to use technology effectively in the classroom. Some students may lose motivation if they are not properly guided and monitored during online learning activities.
Models of Blended Learning
There are different models of blended learning used in ELT classrooms.
Rotation Model

In the rotation model, students move between different learning activities or stations. Some activities are teacher-led, while others are online-based. For example, students may rotate between grammar exercises on tablets, teacher-guided speaking practice, and vocabulary games.
Flipped Classroom Model

In the flipped classroom model, students learn new content at home through videos or online materials. Classroom time is then used for discussion, activities, and practice. For example, students may watch a video about paragraph writing at home and later discuss and write paragraphs in class with teacher support.
Flex Model

In the flex model, students primarily learn online at their own pace, while teachers provide support as needed. For example, students may complete online grammar and vocabulary activities independently while the teacher monitors their progress.
À La Carte Modèle

In the a la carte model, students attend regular classroom lessons and also take some additional online courses. For example, a student may attend regular English classes at school and also enrol in an online pronunciation course.
Enriched Virtual Model

In the enriched virtual model, students complete most of their learning online but attend some face-to-face classes according to a schedule. For example, students may attend weekly speaking sessions in school while doing the remaining coursework online.
Activities Used in Blended Learning for ELT
Teachers can use a variety of interesting activities in blended-learning classrooms. For young learners, activities such as unboxing videos, product reviews, children’s book introductions, karaoke sessions, and cooking projects can make language learning enjoyable and interactive. For adult learners, teachers can use discussion boards, collaborative projects, digital book creation, book circles, and news article discussions to improve communication and critical thinking skills.
Strategies for Effective Blended Learning in ELT
Teachers should focus on student-centred learning and encourage active participation in the classroom. Clear instructions and expectations should be given so that students understand their tasks and learning goals. Teachers should also choose the most suitable blended learning model based on the lesson objectives and learners’ needs. Collaboration tools such as online discussion boards and group activities should be used regularly. Interactive resources like quizzes, games, videos, and multimedia presentations help maintain student interest and motivation.
Blended Learning has become an important approach in modern ELT classrooms. It combines the strengths of traditional classroom teaching and digital technology to create a flexible, interactive, and learner-centred learning environment. Blended learning helps students improve all four language skills through communication, collaboration, and independent learning. Although there are challenges such as technical issues and reduced face-to-face interaction, blended learning offers many opportunities for effective English language teaching and learning in the digital age.
