Radio is one of the oldest and most popular forms of mass media. It provides people with information and entertainment. Radio is accessible, as people can listen to it at home and at work. It is portable because radio receivers are easy to carry, and many smartphones also have radio capabilities. Radio creates mental pictures by stimulating listeners’ imagination, which visualises the people and events described in programmes. Its immediacy allows it to provide real-time news and emergency updates. Radio is an inexpensive medium, as receivers are affordable and programme production costs are comparatively low. Battery-operated radios can work without electricity, making them useful during power cuts and in remote areas. Radio does not require literacy, so even people who cannot read or write can gain information. Selective listening lets listeners choose stations and programmes based on their interests. Radio also has a local reach, providing local news and cultural information. As an audio-only medium, it creates no visual distraction and lets people listen while doing other activities. Its wide audience reach helps it connect people of different ages, economic backgrounds, and geographical locations. Radio is an effective advertising medium for promoting products and services. It also has a strong cultural impact by promoting music, drama, literature, education, and public discussion, preserving traditions, raising social awareness, and shaping public opinion.
