INTRODUCTION
A group discussion is when a bunch of people talk together about a specific topic. This often happens when companies are picking new people/ during job interviews.
The candidates, or those trying to be chosen, discuss the given topic to share facts, opinions, and conclusions. Employers use this technique to assess how well candidates engage actively and work effectively with others. The moderators will introduce themselves and explain the procedure. Then, the group has approximately 10-15 minutes to think and prepare for the discussion on the topic. After that, they talk/discuss for around 30 minutes. The time limits may differ depending on the purpose of the discussion. The moderators use a special sheet to rate each candidate’s performance. This helps them to be fair and consistently judge everyone based on specific rules.
TYPES OF GROUP DISCUSSION
Group discussions are of different types.Ā Factual group discussions focus on everyday topics, assessing how candidates understand and discuss practical issues.Ā Opinion-based group discussions focus on how candidates share their thoughts and ideas, rather than emphasising facts.Ā Case study-based group discussions are designed to solve real-life problems. The group is presented with a hypothetical situation and must work together to figure it out. Abstract group discussions often involve complex topics. In these interviews, interviewers aim to assess whether candidates can think creatively and effectively. Group discussions help check how well candidates think, talk and solve problems.
SKILLS EVALUATED IN GROUP DISCUSSIONS FOR A JOB
In a group discussion, they check different skills to see how well you do. First, they want to know whether you haveĀ the subject knowledgeĀ for the job you’re applying for. If it’s a sales job, they expect you to have extensive knowledge about the products and know how to sell them effectively. They want to see if you canĀ think of new and different ideas. They also lookĀ at how you talk – including your tone, as well as how loud or soft you speak, andĀ how you use your body. If you can talk without stopping and getting stuck, that’s a good thing, especially for jobs that require regular interaction with customers. They also see whether you can take the lead in the conversation, consider other people’s ideas, and listen well without interrupting. All these things together show whether you’re suitable for the job.
GUIDELINES FOR CONDUCTING GROUP DISCUSSION IN CLASSROOMS
- Initial group discussions may be on non-controversial topics, and the discussion group may be given some preparation time.
- Then the teacher can try spontaneous discussions on slightly more controversial topics.
- The class may be split into 2 or 4 groups.
- While one group is carrying on the discussion, another group may be posted to observe them.
- Each participant should have an unknown watcher, who will make notes on that person and give them to the teacher for feedback.
- Key points to observe include the student’s level of participation, body language, tone of voice, manners, confidence level, and overall contribution to the discussion.
- Through this method, the principles of healthy group discussion can be taught.
- Observer students take notes during the discussion, and the teacher guides them in refining their notes.
