Reporting events or issues accurately and impartially is fundamental to journalism. Relying solely on personal observations may offer a limited perspective, and journalists often risk missing crucial events/news. Therefore, diversifying sources is important, enabling reporters to present a more holistic understanding of the news.
In journalism, a “source” refers to the origin or provider of information used in a news story. Sources can be individuals, organisations, documents, or any other channels journalists rely on to gather information. Journalists use sources to verify facts, gather different perspectives, and provide an accurate account of events.
In the relentless pursuit of truth, the reliability of sources emerges as the bedrock upon which journalistic integrity and ethics stand. Journalists must meticulously evaluate the credibility of their sources to safeguard against misinformation and maintain the trust of their readers/audience. Even a slip in this regard can have far-reaching consequences.
Categorising News Sources
Sources can be classified into five:
Category I – Primary Sources & Secondary Sources
Category II – Oral Sources and Written Sources
Category III – Known Sources, Anticipated Sources, Unexpected Sources, Follow-ups
Category IV – Fellow Journalists, Leaked Documents, Tip-offs
Category V – International News Agencies
We cannot put these categories into watertight compartments.Â
