A precis is a short and clear summary of a longer passage. It presents the main ideas of the original text in fewer words while keeping the original meaning and tone. In a precis, unnecessary details, examples, and repetitions are removed, but the essential points are preserved.
The word “precis” comes from the French word précis, which means “a concise summary.” The French term itself comes from the Latin word praecisus, meaning “cut short” or “abridged.”
Thus, the idea behind precis writing is cutting a long passage short while keeping its essential meaning.
