A good resume is an inevitable tool for job seekers. Follow the tips given below to write a good resume.
- Choosing a suitable format: There are two formats for writing resumes: Chronological and Functional. In Chronological format, one can present information related to academics and jobs in a linear sequence, for example, starting with your most recent job and then proceeding backwards. In the Functional format, one focuses on skills, not dates. You can also blend both formats as required.
- Contact Information: Typically, resumes begin with contact information. It should include the following: name, address, phone number, email, and a link to profiles such as LinkedIn.
- Profile summary: A brief note about one’s career goals, skills, and achievements.
- Work experience (if any): It would be impressive if you could start with your most recent job. Don’t forget to include the job title, company name, location, duration and date of employment. One can also include notable accomplishments and skills relevant to the job for which they are applying.
- Academic details: Always start from the highest degree you possess. If you are still at college, mention your expected graduation date.
- Skills: Highlight skills essential to the job you are applying for. Include both technical skills (e.g., Programming skills) and soft skills. (e.g., leadership skills).
- Awards and exceptional achievements (if any): If you have certifications or awards that demonstrate your expertise, include them as well.
- References: Add one or two references for authenticity. Ask permission from references before listing them.
- Straightforward language: Use language that is simple and easy to understand.
- Proofread: Double-check for spelling and grammatical errors.
